The idea of rebuilding an existing railway line in Konavle, Croatia for the purpose of tourism was born in 2003.

The main aims of the project are track reconstruction, the retrofitting of station sites, preserving local cultural heritage, the development of tourism in the region, cross-border cooperation, the promotion of narrow gauge railways, an artefact collection, interviews from original railroad employees, the education of new railroad employees, the organization of small exhibitions, the publishing of monographs, etc.

CIRO works in cooperation with Marko Bradvica, its founder and CEO. In 1989 Marko financed a preliminary feasibility study for the section of track between Uskoplje and Gruz, the old port of Dubrovnik, as well as a further study on the continued extension of this projects route. Marko is the prime driving force behind the project and is an inseparable part of the revitalization of the new railway.

The organization is successfully cooperating with the Dubrovnik-Neretva County (DNC), the City of Dubrovnik, the municipalities Zupa Dubrovacka and Konavle, also with development agencies DUNEA and DURA (regional companies) and NGOs from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.

To date, the CIRO has recorded an increasing number of members from around the world. The members currently involved include Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, France, Norway, Brasil and Spain. On several occasions we have presented our goals, ideas and aims in exhibitions and workshops throughout Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro.
